Dermaplaning for Seriously Smooth Skin

Dermaplaning is becoming popular, thanks to the power of YouTube and social media. And when anything becomes more prominent, people have questions—what is dermaplaning? Is it safe? What benefits will I get from doing it?

We sat down with Aleasha Ewert, one of our resident estheticians and skin experts here at Byōōdē Bar, to get the lowdown on this skin treatment.

Q: So what is dermaplaning, anyway?

A: It’s a gentle and effective exfoliant for your face. I use a medical scalpel to get close contact with the skin, gently scraping off the top layer of dirt and dead skin to leave a smooth finish.

Q: Besides smooth skin, why would someone want to have dermaplaning?

A: Most of us don’t exfoliate enough and, as we age, our skin slows down the cell renewal process. Staying on top of dead skin removal from the surface of your skin helps regulate cell turnover—in other words, your skin repairs itself faster. It also allows for better product absorption and reduces the appearance of superficial fine lines.

Q: What other benefits can be expected?

A: Dermaplaning will give you an instant healthy glow while removing all your built up dead skin cells. It also removes all the vellus hair (also known as peach fuzz) without causing irritation—which is not something all other methods of hair removal can say. And, when you combine dermaplaning with other facial treatments, it doubles the exfoliant process.

Q: This all sounds great, but is it safe?

A: Dermaplaning is very gentle and very safe when you enlist the help of a trained professional. Like all treatments, it’s important to pick an esthetician that follows health and safety standards, works out of a clean and approved environment, and has the appropriate training. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find someone else if you don’t feel comfortable.

Q: Is there anyone who shouldn’t get dermaplaning?

A: Dermaplaning is great for almost everyone. The only skin conditions that aren’t compatible with the treatment are grade 3 and 4 acne where there is a lot of pustules and irritated open skin and/or very thin skin or rosacea.

Q: What else do you want people to know?

A: Healthy skin needs to be nurtured to stay healthy. The four must-haves for the start (and maintenance) of healthy skin are: cleanser that keeps the natural moisture barrier and doesn’t over-dry, proper moisturizer for your skin type, an exfoliant for your skin’s needs, and using SPF all year round.

So there you have it! Dermaplaning is a gentle way to improve your skin to leave your face feeling smooth and looking bright.
